18th SERBIAN FILM FESTIVAL 26 November – 9 December 2018

18th SERBIAN FILM FESTIVAL 26 November – 9 December 2018

This year the Serbian Film Festival will open across Australia at Hoyts cinemas – Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, Adelaide and Fremantle – on Monday 26 November;  in Brisbane, Hoyts Sunnybank on Thursday 29 November. Five contemporary films will be screened throughout the festival, adding to over 120 Serbian feature and documentary films screened throughout the past seventeen years in Australia.

The Serbian Film Festival is delighted to announce that, the 2018 Festival Ambassador is internationally acclaimed author, Sreten Bozic aka B.Wongar. Closing the film festival will be Andrijana Stojkovic’s documentary WONGAR, a story told with subtlety, care and warmth, as it unravels part of his complex life. A Serbian émigré arriving in Australia in 1960, Sreten has worked tirelessly since the 1970s on his various writing projects primarily concerned with the fate of the Australian Aboriginal, environmental issues and the plight of the native dingo. Earlier this year, WONGAR won first prize at the Belgrade Documentary and Short Film Festival. Numerous awards have been received by B.Wongar including The PEN International Award (USA) in 1996 for The Nuclear Trilogy. In 1997 Sreten was awarded the Australia Council Award Lifetime Achievement in Literature Emeritus Award.

Also screening at this year’s film festival will be three dramas. Offenders (Izgrednici), directed by Dejan Zecevic, was recently announced as Serbia’s submission for the Best Foreign Language Film for the 2019 Academy Awards. Predrag Velinovic’s Nowhere (Nigde) had its world premiere at the Montreal World Film Festival in 2017. A stowaway on the ship of lunatics (Slepi putnik na brodu ludaka), directed by Goran Markovic, has won awards at the Shanghai International Film Festival as well as at the Audience Award and Life Achievement Award for Markovic at the Balkan New Film Festival in Stockholm. Front Page Midgets (Patuljci sa Naslovnih Strana), recently screened at the Raindance Film Festival in London, is a comedy and satire directed by Milorad Milinkovic.

The Serbian Film Festival, a registered not-for-profit incorporated body, is proudly supported by many including: Hoyts, The Embassy of the Republic of Serbia, The Consulate of the Republic of Serbia, Beo Group Australia, Serbian Voice/Srpski Glas newspaper, as well as a dedicated group of volunteers.

Opening night celebrations and hospitality commence at 6.30pm with refreshments served. A stowaway on the ship of lunatics (Slepi putnik na brodu ludaka) screens at 7.30pm. The closing night film will be WONGAR screening Australia-wide on Sunday 9 December. At Hoyts Chadstone, Melbourne, there will be a special closing event; after the 4.30pm screening there will be a Q&A with B.Wongar, Michael Eather (Aboriginal Art Consultant) and perhaps an international visitor.
